A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
The number of courses offered in this report is consistent with the data provided by the Office of Institutional Research for the Common Data Set. We went through the total course offerings data to remove physical education courses, performing arts courses, cancelled courses, and internships/independent study courses. To determine the number of academic departments, we counted the number of faculty-assigned departments that were represented within the inventory of total courses.

In order to determine the number of sustainability offerings, we first counted all courses eligible within our Environmental and Sustainability Studies minor. Then we completed a keyword search in the course catalog to inventory all sustainability courses, and determined which of these courses had been taught within our two year inventory period. Keywords included: sustainability, environment, climate change, pollution, conservation, food, and degradation. Finally, we did an inventory of the college’s first- and second-year required SUMMIT courses. Since all of these courses have the sustainability-focused and sustainability-inclusive learning outcomes included in AC 2, and address global sustainability challenges as outlined in the SDGs, we included all of these courses in our inventory. The college’s Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean for Curriculum and Strategic Initiatives, coordinates the SUMMIT curriculum and is actively working to incorporate sustainability across the campus curriculum. Additionally, he has partnered with sustainability director, Susan Kidd, to develop a new incentive program for faculty to develop sustainability courses that align with the college’s unique and innovative SUMMIT curriculum, focused currently on courses tied the a climate change conference planned for September 2021. This program is referenced under AC 7: Incentives for Developing Courses and will apply to courses developed for Fall 2021.

In order to clarify each sustainability entry, we added a column to our spreadsheet to identify the predominant sustainability challenge as provided by STARS and the SDGs.
