A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
The Center for Sustainability is committed to a one-on-one information session during new students’ first day on campus. During first-year move-in, the Environmental Residents (ERs) go door to door as first-years move in to initially talk to the incoming students about waste diversion. There are two to three ERs per residence hall, which ensures they are able to talk to each new residential student. The primary goal is to introduce the new students to the college’s waste diversion program, but it also ensures each student hears directly from a peer on the importance of sustainability on campus. Students and families then have the opportunity to have their individual questions answered. In order to engage with commuter students, a commuter student representative from the Center for Sustainability gives a sustainability presentation during commuter student orientation.
In addition, all undergraduates and transfer students have the opportunity to engage with the Center for Sustainability during orientation brunch, during which time the ERs invite all new students to participate in recycling games. Sustainability is also featured in the orientation guidebook which is distributed to all new students.
Since the college was closed during Fall 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center for Sustainability did not participate in any virtual orientation activities. For the Spring 2021 semester, the college reopened for a reduced number of students. During this move-in/orientation period, the center conducted socially-distanced waste diversion education for all returning students, including updated recycling signage in the dorms and provided individualized recycling bins for styrofoam, plastic film, and cardboard for the duration of the move-in period. The center collected approximately 70 pounds of recycling from this program.
