Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Georgia Trust Award for the Historic Preservation of Rebekah Scott Hall

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In 2018, Agnes Scott completed the $16 million renovation of Rebekah Scott Hall. Originally built in 1905, Rebekah Hall is the second oldest building on campus and serves as the college’s Welcome Center and student dorms. Rebekah Hall was certified LEED Platinum, which alone was a significant achievement for the renovation of a 100+ year old building. Notably, Rebekah Hall is now air conditioned for the first time in its history, utilizing a hybrid-geothermal HVAC system. A surface parking lot was transformed into the geothermal field and now serves as a greenspace adjacent to the building. Agnes Scott is incredibly proud that we are able to not only air condition this building for the first time in its history, but we are able to do so without contributing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the college’s carbon footprint.

In 2019, Rebekah Hall received the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation Chairman’s Award, which is presented at the sole discretion of the Georgia Trust Chairman of the Board of Trustees to recognize extraordinary efforts contributing to the preservation of Georgia’s historic resources. The building also received an award for Excellence in Sustainable Rehabilitation. The college had received this same award - Excellence in Sustainable Rehabilitation - for its renovation of Campbell Hall, built in 1951 and certified LEED Gold. Through the continued recognition of the Georgia Trust, Agnes Scott has become a leader in historic preservation and environmental sustainability, proving the two concepts are not mutually exclusive and that sustainability can be successfully integrated into the very fabric of our historic campus. Agnes Scott is committed to preserving the resources we have on campus, including our built landscape, and repurposing their history to meet the sustainability standards of modern day. While green building is recognized elsewhere in STARS, we believe that the recognition of historic preservation extends beyond what is recognized in STARS.
