The strategic plan addresses the our initiative to increase competitive research programs in energy, environment and economics. Priority #5 of the strategic plan says that Appalachian will develop and implement a comprehensive plan to protect and enhance our distinctive historical, geographical, and cultural identity associated with our location in the Appalachian Mountains.

The mission statement indicates the importance of Appalachian State University accomplishing its initiatives through efficient and effective resource utilization. Further, Priority #3, Initiative #1 states, "Appalachian will offer competitive salaries and benefits for faculty and staff." Along with this initiative, Appalachian will provide the necessary policies and support structure to support faculty and staff career development and satisfaction. Priority #4 states that Appalachian will apply its intellectual, academic, cultural, and research resources to promote sustainable economic growth, prosperity, and quality of life throughout this region and state.
