A brief description of the institution’s formal participatory or shared governance bodies:
- The Student Government Association (SGA) is comprised of undergraduate students that serve the student body. Constitutionally, it serves as the student's voice and enact change on campus through legislation, advocacy, awareness, and representation on the Board of Trustees. It is a governing body that exists to constantly improve the University by including student input on ALL changes and issues that impact the lives of students.

-Likewise, the Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA) of Appalachian State University is a body of appointed senators representing each department within the Graduate School.

- Staff Senate is a consulting body representing the voice of staff among administration, faculty, and the campus community. Staff Senate represents Appalachian State University staff at the UNC System Staff Assembly. Staff Senate ensures that staff work in a positive, respectful atmosphere with potential for their own professional and personal development.
