The Office of Diversity is committed to the principles of accountability and transparency. We produce annual reports of our activities and conduct periodic surveys of faculty, staff and students to assess and improve our DEI campus climate.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Climate Survey
App State’s DEI Climate Survey is a valuable tool that helps the university better understand the perceptions of employees and students regarding their experiences at App State. Survey results will help App State measure overall progress on our DEI campus climate, identify the university’s strengths and areas for improvement, and shape our future DEI goals and programming.

Annual reports for UNC System
Following are the Office of Diversity’s annual reports to the Board of Trustees, in accordance with the UNC Policy Manual Sections 300.8.5 and 300.8.5[R], “Regulation on Diversity and Inclusion,” which requires institutions to present annual reports on diversity and inclusion operations and activities to their boards.

A brief description of the most recent assessment findings and how the results are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:
Underrepresented students, faculty and staff are concerned about micro-aggressions against them on campus, and understand some are unconscious and others are not. These groups are concerned about low numbers of underrepresented students, faculty and staff on campus.
a. We are doing more implicit bias trainings.
b. We are asserting our efforts in underrepresented student, faculty and staff recruitment and retention work.
c. We have initiated the Inclusive Excellence that formally rolled out in August 2018.
d. We assembled an Inclusive Excellence team
e. Student Affairs have Diversity training for staff and students
f. The Office of Multicultural Student Development provides training for students, staff and faculty for greater cultural awareness.
