Arizona State University’s definition of sustainability research has evolved and was developed based upon input from a number of faculty and staff from across the University, but was primarily shaped under the guidance from the Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development, the Global Institute of Sustainability and the School of Sustainability. An oversight committee responsible for coordinating the University’s sustainability research has approved the operating definition used to identify research as sustainability-related. This committee is composed of three members representing three distinct departments:

The University identifies sustainability research activities as those that meet any of the following criteria:
1. Involves an academic unit, administrative unit, or research center that has a primary interest in sustainability related studies.
Examples:
The Global Institute of Sustainability
The School of Sustainability
Arizona Institute for Renewable Energy
Etc.
2. Involves a faculty members either (1) named as a Distinguished Sustainability Scientist or Scholar, (2) named as a Senior Sustainability Scientist or Scholar, or (3) has an academic appointment to the University’s School of Sustainability.
