A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Arizona State University launched a minor in sustainability that is available to undergraduate students who are majoring in any discipline that does not already offer a concentration or a minor in sustainability. Students who pursue the minor are taught the fundamental principles of sustainability, and to determine the sustainability of human institutions, cultures, organizations, and technologies in a variety of environments at the local, national, and global scales. By design, the minor can draw from and supplement any major offered by the university, and all of ASU’s academic advisors are equipped with information about the minor course requirements. The minor became available during the fall 2010 semester and supports ASU’s initiative to make sustainability education and practices university-wide across all of its four campuses. The minor is coordinated by the School of Sustainability, which was established in 2007 in part to develop practical solutions to the most pressing environmental, economic, and social challenges of sustainability.
