A brief description of the program:
Transactions under $50,000 are reserved for small business. This program effectively promotes local businesses. Arizona State University’s sustainability initiatives promote local businesses by taking into account the transportation of materials to the University. For example, our solicitation for custodial paper was awarded to a firm 165 miles away rather than to the previous contractor some 1500 miles away. Further, the University works with Local First Arizona (http://www.localfirstaz.com/ )to identify local businesses, the various chambers of commerce, and the various groups promoting diversity suppliers to identify local businesses. During fiscal year 2010, we placed 56.4 percent of our spend with local Arizona businesses.
