Among 40 species in ASU's date palm collection, several have been extirpated by war and strife from native habitats in the Mideast. Many pupfish in AZ are endangered due to habitat loss and to help save the species some pupfish are held in protected areas to continue breeding. The ASU collection is one of these.

ASU protects species of endangered date palms that have been extirpated from native ecosystems in the Mideast. The Tempe campus also has a population of endangered pupfish, Cyprinodon macularius in the Desert Arboretum Park artificial stream and pond.

A date palm collection on the Polytechnic campus allows for breeding of endangered palm species.
