Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Student-led Water Fixture Retrofits & Recycling
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In support of ASU's Optimize Water goal, ASU students led an innovative project to replace or upgrade 2,000 fixtures to reduce water use by an estimated 26,000,000 gallons of water per year. The project covered indoor plumbing fixtures in 60 buildings on ASU's Tempe campus and two buildings on ASU's Downtown Phoenix campus. Phase 1 of the project has been completed; the students have started the inventory for Phase 2.
Innovative components of this project include:
- Students conducted the inventory of fixtures
- Students completed the financial analysis and submitted the application to ASU's revolving loan fund
- In collaboration with ASU Zero Waste and Office of the University Architect, all fixtures that were removed have been crushed into aggregate for re-use on campus in construction projects. Historically, this material would have been disposed of in a landfill. Our internal name for this material is "Porcecrete".
Additionally, this project represents the first wide-scale plumbing retrofit effort at ASU to reduce indoor water use.
