A brief description of the institution’s main campus and other aspects of the institutional boundary used to complete this report:
ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom we exclude, but rather by whom we include and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves.

ASU established an Institutional Boundaries Task Force in 2016 to review and establish the institutional boundaries for sustainability reporting. ASU builds off of The Climate Registry's Protocol and uses the Operational Control methodology.

For ASU’s boundary purposes, operational control will be defined as ASU’s substantial authority to make improvements to the sustainability impacts of the facility. That is, the energy and water efficiency, the waste generation and disposition, and the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers on the landscaping (ASU must have authority over at least 2 of the 3).

Full detail on various boundary inclusion/exclusions is provided in the file uploaded to the "Additional documentation to support the submission". Generally, the following are included within ASU's institutional boundaries:
- Downtown Phoenix campus
- Polytechnic campus
- Lake Havasu City campus
- Tempe campus
- West campus

Institutional Boundary note regarding Thunderbird:
In late 2014, the Thunderbird School of Global Management became a part of ASU. As noted in the institutional boundary document, the school was excluded due to ASU planning decisions. Since then, the legacy campus of Thunderbird, located in Glendale, AZ, was transferred to Arizona Christian University while the students, faculty, and staff of the school moved into the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus. As such, the prior campus of Thunderbird was not included within ASU's institutional boundary while the students, faculty, and staff are included (as well as the buildings they occupy on the Downtown campus).
