As a publicly-funded institution in the state of Alabama, Auburn University is effectively precluded by Executive Order 39 from utilizing LEED as a certification program for design and construction of university-funded projects. As such, Facilities Management is in the process of formalizing and adopting Design and Construction Standards that incorporate LEED principles/practices, with an anticipated adoption date in 2016. As such, all major capital projects taking place on campus in the future will be required to be built utilizing these practices, even though we are precluded from taking advantage of the formal LEED-certification process, or similar rating schemes.
In addition to the OIT Building, the university also received LEED Silver recognition for the Aquatic Resources Management Center in 2012. This square footage, however, is not included in the totals above because it lies outside the operational boundary for the scope of our STARS assessment.
