For years, we have been sending our brown grease to the local landfill - which was very hard for them to process, and a costly and unwanted destination for this material for us. We have since identified and partnered with Agricycle Energy, a local methane digestion facility. They are able to take our brown grease, approximately 10-16 tons of the material, and compost it in the absence of oxygen to produce usable natural gas and a nutrient rich slurry. We have also partnered with Maine Standard Biofuels, a local biodiesel producer, which takes our yellow grease and returns it in the form of a biodiesel blend to heat our buildings. They are able to handle from us roughly 2,000 gallons annually. We then buy the finished product from them in the form of B20 to heat our smaller buildings. We go through about 100,000 gallons a year of heating oil, and so beginning to use a B20 blend has a large positive effect on our emissions profile.
