A brief description of when and why the workplace health and safety baseline was adopted:
Bentley is required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration under the U.S. Department of Labor (29 CFR 1904.8 - 1904.12) to file the OSHA log annually. The calculation period for OSHA recordable injury rates is based on the calendar year from January to December rather than the fiscal year.

A brief description of the institution’s workplace health and safety initiatives:
Bentley’s lowest incident rate was reported in 2011 with only 12 incidents. Monthly safety trainings are conducted for union staff. Laboratory safety training is provided for the Natural and Applied Sciences department which includes research professors. Bentley reinstituted their EHS Steering Committee that meets quarterly to discuss safety issues and initiatives on campus in addition to providing informal training topics including slips, trips and falls, ergonomics, emergency preparedness and safety prevention. EHS maintains a monthly audit program that identifies safety issues across campus. Accident investigations are conducted to address injuries sustained on campus. Bentley's highest incidents typically involve slips trips and falls and manual material handling/ergonomics issues. Bentley's EHS person does extensive training and audits including: Contractor safety training prior to construction projects; compliance audits of all buildings and golf cart training for employees to assist with various programs utilizing golf carts. Safety initiatives, in conjunction with union work rules, include Job Hazard Analysis for union staff to identify major job risks as a proactive approach towards injury prevention. Bentley’s management conducts monthly safety observations to review adherence to safety requirements including wearing required PPE. EHS also works closely with Residence Life staff to address safety concerns and issues. EHS collaborates with Work Order Control to promptly address and investigate safety issues. EHS sets safety goals at the beginning of the year to provide direction for mitigating safety issues on campus. Additional safety oversight is provided during big events such as graduation and open house to maintain vendor safety compliance. EHS collaborates with Campus Police to manage any potential emergency safety situations such as chemical spills, bomb threats or unforeseeable problems.
