Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Sustainable Communities Transdisciplinary Area of Excellence (SCTAE)
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The SCTAE is one of five transdisciplinary areas of excellence identified by the University. The TAE consists of a Steering Committee appointed by the Provost and affiliated and core faculty (some of which were recruited and hired to as a part of the TAE, others who "joined" the TAE from the existing faculty). The TAE sponsors research, educational, and campus service projects related to sustainability. The overarching goal of the TAE is to become internationally recognized for sustainable communities research and education, and as a campus dedicated to sustainability. The program is innovative and exceeds what is covered by existing STARS credits in two important ways: 1) it integrates research, education, and service related to sustainability; 2) it is associated with a faculty hiring plan in which hiring decisions are shared between departments and the SCTAE steering committee (in the case of affiliated faculty) or completely within the control of the Steering Committee (in the case of core faculty). This has helped encourage more interdisciplinary collaborations.
