Alternative Transportation

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:
Binghamton University's Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) offers carpool and ride-share incentives, free / low cost bike share services and public transportation resources to faculty, students and staff. Recently TAPS offered chances to win gift certificates to complete a survey which brought about awareness of these services to the campus community.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
The pilot Bike Share program was launched November 1, 2013 and had over 160 hours of use and 40 unique users in its first month. The University is hoping to expand this program by connecting the campus and community with a pedestrian and bike trail and expanding the system to the city of Binghamton.

RecycleMania

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and bench-marking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling. With each week’s updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
The diversion rate on campus increased ~3 percentage points during the recycling competition. The difference in recycling due to the RecycleMania competition resulted in a 12 ton increase of recycled items, during the FY17-18 competition compared to the FY16-17. There was a 2 ton reduction during the competition in landfill waste compared to the previous year. RecycleMania motivates the Campus body to participate in waste reduction efforts. We have seen an improved diversion rate from 30% to 31% from FY16-17 to FY17-18.
