Overview
The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion helps drive the University-wide strategic priority to promote unity and foster a diverse and inclusive campus community.

Mission
To advance Binghamton University's teaching, research and service mission and commitment to excellence by working collaboratively throughout the institution with faculty, staff and students to promote a campus climate that values diversity, equity and inclusion.

Faculty & Staff: Each of Binghamton University's seven divisions appoints a diversity officer that reports directly to the dean or vice president of the respective division. Divisional Diversity Officers (DDO) meet monthly with the Vice President for Diversity regarding DEI initiatives, policies, procedures or programming and the assessment of divisional goals and outcomes.

Students: The Student Association (SA) is a separate independent arm of the University that coordinates student activities and provides governance in partnership with the University. Student Association leadership includes the offices of the president and five vice presidents, including the Office of the Vice President for Multicultural Affairs (VPMA). The VPMA provides oversight for programming initiatives among the designated cultural groups within the SA. The VPMA works closely with University administration, including the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, to provide purposeful programming and address diversity-related concerns and issues. The Office of the VPMA sponsors a diversity committee with representation from student staff, residential communities and student leaders across the cultural groups of the institution.

A brief description of the institution’s cultural competence, anti-oppression, anti-racism, and/or social inclusion trainings and activities:
The UDiversity Educational Institute, a unit in the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, conducts the majority of cultural competency and social inclusion training. Workshops and training focus on building cultural competency and awareness of diversity-related issues; reflection on personal socialization; exploration of privilege and oppression, and tools and resources that empower participants to become change agents. Training curricula cover various topics, including addressing unconscious bias, equity within hiring, etc.

Active Ally and LGBTQ+ awareness training are conducted through the Q Center, a unit in the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Active Ally model focuses on what it means to serve LGBTQIA individuals and communities in an engaged capacity. The training modules address the fundamentals of ally development, systemic oppression and LGBTQIA communities, and sustainable change. The program is open to all students and employees, straight, cisgender allies and LGBTQIA people.

Anti-racism and anti-oppression trainings and activities are offered through our Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equity, Kaschak Institute for Social Justice for Women and Girls, Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention, Institute for Justice and Well Being, Human Rights Institute and annual LOCO Festival.

We also offer other diversity and inclusive programs, workshops and training opportunities for students, faculty and staff through the Affirmative Action Office, Multicultural Resource Center, and Q Center. Many of these programs are developed in partnership with other divisions/departments on campus, area higher education institutions and community organizations.
