A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (1st program):
Bowdoin's EcoRep program serves the students in each first year residence hall. In addition, in 2011 Bowdoin expanded the EcoRep program to each College House, an upperclassman residence with which each first year residence hall is affiliated. The student EcoReps meet weekly to discuss sustainability issues and plan outreach events. Some events are full-campus affairs like Greenstock, an outdoor concert run on "green" energy, and some are more focused on specific classes or buildings like the "Energy-Saving Dorm Competition." Eco-reps frequently "table" in the dining halls and "dormstorm" within their dorms to interact with students more directly.

None
A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):
Students apply to the Sustainable Bowdoin office to become an EcoRep. Applicants are interviewed by the Outreach Coordinator and selected based on a variety of qualities including knowledge of sustainability, creativity and effective communication skills .

None
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):
Bowdoin's Sustainability Outreach Coordinator conducts a training for the Eco-reps at the beginning of the year. This training includes strategies for working with their residents to encourage green campus involvement and making environmentally conscious choices, and familiarizing Eco-reps with facilities around campus as they will be resources for other students. This training also includes strategies for increasing campus wide involvement in green events the Eco-reps will be working on throughout the year. The College House EcoReps are upperclassmen hired the previous academic year, giving them more time for official training before classes begin. Because the first-year EcoReps are hired a month into the fall semester, the upperclassmen EcoReps act as mentors for their affiliate first-year partners during their training.

None

There are 8 Sophomore EcoReps and 8 First year EcoReps, each paid a $420 stipend through Sustainable Bowdoin. The Office of Sustainability employs 2 full time staff--the Coordinator for a Sustainabile Bowdoin and the Outreach Coordinator.
