A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contribute to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:
Both of Bowdoin's two most recent major LEED certified construction projects (completed in January 2009 and September 2009) diverted over 75% of their construction waste from the landfill. One of the two projects received an innovation point for diverting over 95% of its waste.
All demolition projects on campus are handled by a professional who sends material to a local demolition recycling center where materials are divided into categories such as treated and untreated wood; asphalt shingles; concrete and brick; metal; insulation; wire; glass; carpet; sheetrock; cardboard; and corrugated container board.
