A brief description of the programs sponsored by the institution to support underrepresented groups within the student body:
There are a number of institutionally funded student organizations for under-represented groups on campus. Additionally there are two residential houses, The Multicultural House and the Russwurm African American Center, designed for use by these support programs. The multicultural house is home to Bowdoin's multicultural student organizations. The first floor of the building is dedicated to general student use. There are rooms for meeting, dining, prayer, and socializing. There are also two kitchens on the first floor: one general purpose kitchen and a kitchen used solely to prepare foods that are either kosher or halal. The first floor is open to casual use, but can also be reserved for specific events. The second floor contains offices and resources for student leaders. The third floor is housing for student interns. Russwurm House contains a kitchen, African-American library, and student housing. The library is often used for programs and events tailored to the mission of the African-American studies major. Bowdoin's Admissions Office participates in several programs for underrepresented groups, such as Quest Bridge, College Horizons, and Experience Weekend. Quest Bridge: National organization with 33 partner colleges – host 3 conferences per year for underrepresented students – the mission is to expose low income students to places like Bowdoin. College Horizons: College Horizons is a non-profit organization that supports the higher education of Native American students by providing college and graduate admissions workshops to American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian students/participants from across the nation. Bowdoin is one of roughly 45 partner colleges. They host a conference for the students where expert and one-on-one advising is provide. Experience Weekend: Bowdoin hosts an Experience Weekend in the spring of each year which brings accepted students of low income and minority background to campus for a weekend of exploration and special programs and lectures hosted by a variety of departments and student groups. Additionally, Bowdoin is a participating institution in the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program. This fund targets "marginalized persons of color" and encourages them to research with a faculty mentor and to apply to graduate school within 39 months of commencement.
