Does new student orientation include presentations, speakers, or skits that address sustainability and take place in large venues that most or all first-year students attend?:
Yes
None
Provide a brief description of the presentations, speakers or skits:
Starting with the class of 2016, we showed a film to incoming first years titled "Stay Green 2016". The film was primarily distributed to first years via their class Facebook page before arrival to campus, but it was also shown in the dining hall during one of the meals during orientation.
None
Does new student orientation incorporate sustainability information into presentations (e.g., made by Residential Advisors to individual dorm floors)?:
Yes
None
Provide a brief description of the presentations:
An Eco Rep and Residential Life staff member visit each floor of the first year dorms and explain the zero sort recycling, pass out CFL light bulbs, and review an "Eco Tips" handout. In addition, a mailer in the summer details what students should and should not buy for the sake of the environment (ie, energy star rated mini-fridges, energy efficient bulbs, no space eaters, etc).
None
Does new student orientation actively engage students in activities that raise awareness about sustainability, highlight how sustainability plays out on campus, or allows students to take part in a productive green activity?:
Yes
None
Provide a brief description of the activities:
The first meal of the incoming class is a local-themed dinner made from food sourced within a 100-500 mile radius.
Early in September, Sustainable Bowdoin hosts "Greenstock," an outdoor event that offers info booths, live music, organic garden demonstrations, and a picnic provided by our dining services.
None
Does the institution make new student orientation more sustainable via efforts such as a zero-waste meal or carbon offsets?:
No
None
Provide a brief description of the efforts:
The campus already offsets all their electricity with carbon offsets, and already composts the food from dining hall meals (which are served in the dining halls on non-disposable dinnerware) - so we don't need to do anything special during orientation.
None
Does the institution incorporate sustainability into new student orientation in other ways?:
