Bowdoin owns approximately 130 acres of land that borders town designated conservation land. The Town conservation land protects two unique natural communities; the natural Sandplain Grassland and the Pitch-Pine Heath Barren. The Sandplain Grassland is also considered habitat for two birds listed as endangered and protected under the Maine Endangered Species Act, the Upland Sandpiper and the Grasshopper Sparrow.

TRC Consultants conducted vernal pool surveys on this 130 acres in 2008 and updated those surveys in 2014 on behalf of the College.

Vernal pools provide primary breeding habitat for wood frogs, spotted salamanders, blue-spotted salamanders, and fairy shrimp.

Significant vernal pools are regulated in Maine under the Natural Resources Protection Act. Surveying and identifying these areas allows the College to plan development away from significant habitats.
