A brief description of the diversity and equity committee, office and/or officer, including purview and activities:
The University Diversity Council (UDC) in the Office of the President was established in fall 2014 in order to advance the priorities outlined in the Chico State 2011-2016 Diversity Action Plan (DAP). Diversity and academic excellence in the 21st century are inextricably linked. While “diversity” often brings to mind issues of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and sexual orientation, the UDC will also consider additional aspects of our identities. For example, veterans, foster youth, returning students, DREAM students, and those with different physical abilities or learning styles, all contribute to the richness of our campus community. As the Chico State student population becomes more diverse, our faculty, staff, curriculum, and co-curricular programming should also reflect these demographic shifts. The UDC will meet regularly and engage on and off-campus stakeholders in order to create high quality and inclusive learning environments both within and outside of the classroom.
