CSULB's Climate Action Plan (adopted in 2014) identified the opportunity to transition more of the campus fleet to low and zero emissions fuel sources as one strategy for reducing overall campus greenhouse gas emission. In September 2014, the CSULB Sustainability Task Force approved a proposal to establish a Clean Fleet Policy for the University, which would require all departments to purchase the cleanest vehicle available according to the intended use of the vehicle. At the system-wide level, the CSU Board of Trustees reaffirmed their commitment to reduce systemwide facility greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the CSU Sustainability Policy (adopted May 2014).They specifically mentioned the purchase of fleet vehicles in achieving this goal, stating, “Emissions will include both state and auxiliary organization purchases of electricity and natural gas; fleet, marine vessel usage; and other emissions the university or self-support entity has direct control over.
