Sustainability Committee(s)
Yes
The charter or mission statement of the committee(s) or a brief description of each committee's purview and activities:
The university's Sustainability Task Force (STF) was established in 2011 to implement the actions and programs necessary to meet the Second Nature Carbon Commitment (then known as the ACUPCC). While the Climate Commitment has remained a central focus, the mission of the STF has evolved over time to include a broader range of issues. As a result, several Subcommittees and Working Groups have formed to tackle specific areas of focus, including:
- Zero Waste Working Group - focuses on increasing waste diversion and developing a Zero Waste Plan and program in collaboration with auxiliary partners.
- Water Conservation & Efficiency Working Group - focuses on identifying, researching, and implementing water conservation programs and strategies, including assisting with the update of the Water Action Plan.
- Clean Energy Working Group - focuses on identifying strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to energy, including assisting with the development of a Clean Energy Master Plan.
- Communications & Engagement Working Group - focuses on raising awareness about campus sustainability efforts and programs and building the CSULB Sustainability "brand."
- Sustainable Transportation Working Group - focuses on identifying and implementing programs and policies that will promote a shift toward more sustainable transportation modes and ultimately a reduction in the university's transportation related greenhouse gas emissions.
- Sustainability Curriculum Working Group - focuses on evaluating current courses that incorporate sustainability concepts and identifying strategies for increasing sustainability course offerings.
- Research Support Working Group - focuses on identifying faculty research, scholarly, and creative activities related to sustainability.
- Sustainable Procurement Working Group - focuses on researching best practices in sustainable procurement and developing sustainable procurement policies for CSULB.
- Resilience Working Group - focuses on creating connections with the City of Long Beach and the wider community to begin the process of fulfilling the deliverables for the Resilience Commitment.
In addition to these Working Groups which report to the STF, Associated Students, Inc. also has an ad hoc sustainability committee called Sustain U. Sustain U focuses on creating an awareness of sustainability throughout the Associated Students Inc. (ASI), the University Student Union (USU), and the University as a whole.
