The Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) program is a CSU system-wide initiative that helps lower the costs of course materials by (1) providing faculty information and resources for "free" or "lower" cost alternatives for students and (2) spreading awareness through the CSULB community. These resources/alternatives include open educational resources (OER), library resources, used books, rentals, looseleafs, coursepacks, BeachBookCompare.com, Day 1 Digital Access, and other AL$ lower-cost alternatives.
The AL$ Committee at CSULB is a collaborative effort between Academic Technology, Bookstore Services, and the University Library with support from the Provost's Office, Academic Senate, Financial Services, and faculty. The average price of course materials (APCM) sold/rented at CSULB in Spring 2012 was $61.28. With inflation, it would be at $69.54 for Spring 2020. However, the APCM sold/rented at CSULB in Spring 2020 was $42.84, with help of the AL$ initiative.
In 2016, the CSULB Academic Senate approved the resolution to support and encourage campus faculty to consider using high-quality, low cost or no cost, accessible textbook alternatives as approved in Assembly Bill 798 “College Textbook Affordability Act of 2015” to compete for grant funding allocated to the CSU by the bill.

Incentives are made available by funding through the CSU Chancellor's Office and AB 798.
The AL$ team offers $15 promotional incentives for faculty who participate in "Introduction to AL$" training, whether it be on a 1-on-1 basis or through departmental/campus AL$ presentations. The AL$ team also offers a $500 stipend to any faculty who will convert their course from using existing high-cost course materials to existing available open educational resources (OER) or hybrid-OER.
