A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
The baseline year was selected because it was the year in which the first greenhouse gas emissions inventory was completed. The year 2009-10 was selected because it was the most recent year for which data was available when the university signed the Second Nature Carbon Commitment in 2011. This is also the baseline year used in our previous (and first) STARS submission in 2017 and we believe that maintaining our original baseline will allow us to best track our progress over time.

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
The university installed a 4.75-megawatt solar photovoltaic energy system, constructed a net-zero energy classroom building, and renovated another building to LEED standards. We also launched a campus-wide building retro-commissioning project that aims to optimize energy conservation across all building floor space over a 10 year period. Additionally, we engaged in long-term planning for central plant infrastructure improvements including the retirement of aging infrastructure and retrofitting heating systems to include heat recovery chillers, which will help meet campus heating needs while also partially decarbonizing the centralized heating plant.
The university has also continued to encourage our campus community to shift toward more sustainable commuting modes. Programs include subsidized public transportation passes, improvements to bicycle infrastructure and wayfinding on and around campus, improved communication and marketing efforts to raise awareness about sustainable transportation programs, and the integration of the City of Long Beach's bike share program on campus grounds.
The university has also continued to encourage our campus community to shift toward more sustainable commuting modes.
