A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
The Office of Sustainability, Associated Students, Inc.'s Sustain U group, and the Sustainable Transportation program participate in Week of Welcome, a resource fair that takes place over 4 days at the start of the fall and spring semesters. At Week of Welcome, new and returning students are invited to learn about programs, student organizations, and campus resources. At this event, students have the opportunity to learn about the campus' sustainability programs, commitments, and initiatives as well as ways they can get involved on and off campus in sustainability efforts. Students are engaged through waste sorting games, surveys, and other interactive activities. New students and transfer students are the primary target audience for Week of Welcome, however, all students are able to participate.
Additionally, because scope 3 commuter emissions make up the majority of the university's carbon footprint, the Sustainable Transportation team conducted outreach over the summers of 2022 and 2023 through the Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program. All new students and transfer students are required to complete the program before the start of the semester. All advisors/tour guides were required to go through a 1-hour training informing them of all the different sustainable transportation options offered at CSULB. Sustainable Transportation staff also tabled at all 8 sessions of SOAR. At the tables, students were informed of discounts they could get for different types of transportation such as bikes, buses, carpools, EVs. Additionally, a 1-hour Zoom meeting was held to answer any questions parents or new students had about accessing discounts for transportation.

According to the provided dashboard, 5756 first time students and 4386 transfer students came to CSULB in Fall 2023. Total who would have participated in Summer 23 SOAR is 10,142. 580 Post Baccalaureate and 1551 Graduate students also started in fall 2023. They would not have participated in SOAR. Total 2131. Therefore, the percentage of students who participated in orientation would be 10,142/12,273 = 82.6%
