Has the institution engaged in a structured assessment process during the previous three years to improve diversity, equity and inclusion on campus?:
A brief description of the assessment process and the framework, scorecard(s) and/or tool(s) used:
The CSULB Campus Climate Survey was conducted in 2020 to evaluate employee perceptions regarding the campus climate and covered important topics such as diversity, satisfaction with the work environment, and employee engagement. The survey was conducted electronically by The Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California Los Angeles. The University continuously reports back on progress made in the most concerning areas identified in the Campus Climate Survey. Moreover, in response to CSU's plan to elevate Black Student Success, the Office of the Provost led a Black Student Success Inventory and Action Plan that aims to identify all the resources provided on campus to support our Black students, as well as gaps and opportunity areas. A comprehensive report of these findings, and response actions, is expected to become available in 2024.
Does the assessment process address campus climate by engaging stakeholders to assess the attitudes, perceptions and behaviors of employees and students, including the experiences of underrepresented groups?:
Does the assessment process address student outcomes related to diversity, equity and success?:
Does the assessment process address employee outcomes related to diversity and equity?:
A brief description of the most recent assessment findings and how the results are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:
The Campus Climate Committee, along with many campus partners, produced a comprehensive report detailing the results of the Campus Climate Survey. This report is the result of a massive effort of several shared governance bodies on campus. These bodies include The Academic Senate, including the Executive Committee, the Campus Climate Committee, and the LGBTQIA+ Campus Climate Committee. The President’s Commissions on Equity and Change, Status of Women, and Sustainably also contributed to the report. Contributing campus partners include the Staff Council and initially representatives from the Divisions of Academic Affairs, Administration and Finance, and Students Affairs. Members of these groups not only authored the report yet for many preceding years gave input on which survey products would best suit the needs of the campus, how to equitably offer incentives to students, staff, and faculty and members of the aforementioned bodies provided input on the organization of the report. That there is no single author to this report reflects the campus-wide commitment to better understanding our campus climate so that we might reach our Beach 2030 goals. A high-level overview of survey results: Student Diverse Learning Environments Survey results: • 80.5% of students reported strongly agreeing/agreeing that they feel a sense of belonging on campus • 94.3% of students reported strongly agreeing/agreeing the campus has a longstanding commitment to diversity • 4.3% of students reported that they witnessed discrimination very often/often Staff Climate Survey results: • 84.1% of stateside staff and 87.4% of auxiliary staff reported strongly agreeing/agreeing they feel a sense of belonging on campus • 70.3% of stateside staff and 81.8% of auxiliary staff reported strongly agreeing/agreeing they felt an overall satisfaction with their job • 7.8% of stateside staff and 16% of auxiliary staff reported they witnessed discrimination very often/often Faculty Survey results: • 82.4% of faculty report that they strongly agree/agree that a racially/ethnically diverse student body enhances the educational experience of all students • 77.4% of faculty reported that teaching is essential • 4.3% of faculty reported they witnessed discrimination very often/often. Additional results can be viewed here: https://csulb.sharepoint.com/sites/Campus-Climate/ To improve campus climate for faculty and staff, assessment results were used to inform the work of the Staff Equity and Inclusion Advisor, a brand-new position established in 2023. A new training program and resources website was created related to equity and diversity practices in recruitment and hiring. The university also officially expanded its definition of DEI to DEIA (for accessibility). DEIA Day programming took place on March 15, 2023, to raise campus awareness about the campus efforts to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. A new program called Beach XP was launched in the fall of 2023 to enhance and maintain the sense of belonging of first-year students on campus. The program follows a "homeroom" and cohort model to allow students to make connections and access resources and support as they begin their college careers.
Are the results of the most recent structured diversity and equity assessment shared with the campus community?:
A brief description of how the assessment results are shared with the campus community:
A website was developed to share the assessment findings, report, and infographics. Notices about the report and resources for supporting the university's DEIA goals and initiatives are regularly distributed to the campus community via newsletters and other campus-wide communications. Additionally, a research collaborative comprised of students, faculty, staff/administrators, alumni, and community affiliates was formed to provide support and guidance on campus climate research efforts. The group is responsible for developing Ethical Use Guidelines and a Data Access Request Process.
