A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:
This assessment tool was originally developed and adopted for use in Biology 123 (Biological Systems) in 2010-11 a core course option in the Natural Sciences group for majors of disciplines other than Biology. We continue to use to use this test, or iterations very close to this test. (David Dornbos)
A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
Biology 123 (Biological Systems) is one of several core options students may elect to take. The assessment tool is used in every Biology 123 section taught, typically two sections or more are taught each academic year. The pre-test is administered during the first or second class each semester to all students in the course, the post-test is administered on either the last day of class or during the exam session. Student responses are not assessed for purposes of their grade, students are only evaluated as having completed or not completed the assessment, enabling students to "self-assess learning gains" (SALG). These SALG assessments are aggregated by class by most instructors. (David Dornbos)
A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
Biology 123 students' self assess large gains in knowledge about most of the topics assessed. For example, how much global warming has occurred, quantitative importance of greenhouse gas sources, impacts of climate warming on organism range, ecosystem functions, biodiversity types, and extinction rate. (David Dornbos)
