Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
NSERC Grant
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In 2023, CAPU was awarded a (renewable) 5-year, $1.5M grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to support CapU students and faculty in pursuing important applied research on regional climate action in the public and private sectors. By receiving this grant CAPU aims to position itself as a leader in environmental research developing innovative solutions to regional climate issues.
Tangible outcomes from faculty-led research will include new university-community partnerships where outputs will influence business practices that will balance social, economic, and environmental needs alongside urban and rural development, impacting the good health of our local communities and across Canada. Students and faculty will also drive innovation that contributes to our social and economic wellbeing. Collaborating with partners on and off campus, faculty and students will develop new solutions to the climate challenges we face every day.
Additionally, the Mobilize funding grant will also support the development of a new Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Sustainability (CIRS) at CapU that will focus on research themes such as sustainable tourism, biodiversity, and the integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in community and business practices. The grant will also support faculty-led research partnerships with a focus on regional sustainability, such as the research currently underway with Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society (HSBRIS), EarthWorks and the UN-SDGs.
With sustainability as it's core theme, the grant will also directly support the ability for sustainable learning both on and off campus. By expanding applied environmental research opportunities and increasing awareness of environmental issues, students will be further equipped with a knowledge of contemporary issues to become leaders for change in their own careers. The grant is currently supporting diverse student research activities, including; 'Determining if crab apples are safe for harvesting by the Tsleil Waututh nation through heavy metal and organic pollutant sampling', and 'Managing recreation impacts on Biodiversity and cultural use values in the Shannon Basin'.
Research is not considered for promotion or tenure at CAPU and hence the above detail has not been captured within the AC Research credits. However, despite this, the grant represents a substantial culture of environmental consideration within the faculty and an ability to implement innovative change through applied research.
