A brief description of the institution’s formal participatory or shared governance bodies:
Board of Governors:
The Capilano University Board of Governors directs the affairs of the University and sets policies in accordance with the University Act of British Columbia. The 13 member Board of Governors includes the Chancellor, the President, eight persons appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor; two students elected from students who are members of the student society, one person elected by and from the employees of the university who are not faculty members and two faculty members elected by the faculty.
Capilano University Student Union:
The Student Union of which all students enrolled in at least one course are members provides advocacy, representation, and experiences to complement academic pursuits. The Students’ Union is led by an elected board of student leaders and supported by paid staff members. In addition to elected membership on various governance bodies of the University, the Student Unions’ executive team meets with the university executive on a monthly basis to discuss student issues.
Senate:
The senior academic governing body of the University responsible for policies concerning curriculum content and student evaluation, withdrawal, academic standing, appeals, grading and awards for excellence. The Senate is composed of 26 voting representatives including faculty, deans, students, the chancellor, president, academic vice-president, chief librarian and one alumnus or alumna. There are also non-voting members.
Capilano University Faculty Association:
Started in 1969, the CFA addresses issues of faculty workload, professional development, access to benefit plans, and fair and open processes such as evaluation, appointments, and assignments of workload.
Staff Union - MoveUp:
Capilano University non academic support staff are represented by MoveUp which includes a collective bargaining unit with representation at all levels.
