ENACTUS Capilano

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:

Enactus Capilano is an affiliation of the global non-profit, Enactus, an organization committed to facilitating a more sustainable planet through entrepreneurial projects. For Enactus Capilano, that means empowering students and youth to meet the social, economic, and environmental needs of communities in the Greater Vancouver area. Enactus Capilano has made a difference for 500 lives with its dedication to spreading awareness about financial literacy and sustainability practices. With 4 current projects contributing to Enactus’ mission of empowering aspiring entrepreneurs nationwide, Enactus Capilano only grows from here.



Square One: Enactus Capilano’s current biggest project is Square One–– a program fostering entrepreneurial leadership to address the lack of financial literacy taught in the current BC Curriculum. In the past year alone, the program has already positively impacted 650 high school students, and projects a long term social return on investment of $1.1M within the local community.
U-Belong: U-belong is a mental well-being-focused project that provides an inclusive space to CapU students through its curated journal prompts, care packages, and interactive events, directly impacting 352 students.



Green Blog: Established in 2023, GreenBlog is a project that originated from a Capilano University/CityStudio North Vancouver course collab. Further worked on by Enactus Capilano, GreenBlog’s goal is to serve as a hub for learning green and sustainable information for the community, students, and entrepreneurs of all ages to use.
Sustainability Project: In efforts to tackle food insecurity and food waste, Enactus Capilano has partnered with Cobs Bread to host weekly events where members hand out complementary baked goods to CapU students. 



The ENACTUS team have received formal recognition for their impacts within the local community. Square One is now the most recognized Financial Litteracy Project within Western Canada for Enactus, placing Top 4 in Canada and Top 14 in North America for the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards. Additonally CAPU ENACTUS were awareded the 2024 ENACTUS Regional Runner Up award in two categories for the positive impact of Square One. Together with the other initiatives, the ENACTUS Capilano team continue to provide substantial positive impacts to the CAPU Campus and wider local communities.

Second Point of Distinction

EarthWorks

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

The Earthworks initiative is the primary sustainability 'hub' on campus; an initiative driven by students, staff and faculty from CapU’s Biology, English, Geography, Early Childhood Care & Education, Interdisciplinary Studies, Tourism Management, Outdoor Recreation Management, Motion Picture Arts and Documentary Filmmaking programs and beyond. Now in it's 12th year, EarthWorks aims to educate and inspire students, members of the campus and the local community to understand complex environmental issues from a multi-disciplinary perspective, enabling all to take action for positive change.


Each term EarthWorks hosts several events featuring guest speakers. Students participating in three lectures and one environmental restoration event per term receive an EarthWorks notation on their transcript. Co-curricular credits can also be earned for volunteer work. Additionally, EarthWorks partners with the Capilano Students Union to develop its annual SDG Week programming - a week long, student led sustainability event to raise awareness and engagement of sustainability within the community.

Third Point of Distinction

Name of a third highlighted program/initiative/accomplishment:
Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society Partnership

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:

In 2021, Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society (HSBRIS) and CapU created a joint working group committee to explore applied research opportunities. This partnership fits with the society's mission of connecting more youth to nature and CapU's commitment to sustainability, outlined in the Envisioning 2030 and Illuminating 2030 guiding strategies. Since then, the working group has created more than 20 community-based opportunities for faculty and students to work on projects that deepen their connection to the region.



The HSBRIS purpose is based upon the principals of Sustainable Development, Biodiversity Conservation and Reconciliation, Equity and Inclusion. Closely aligning to CAPU's values and programming, the Initiative has led to positive contributions in knowledge and engaging students and faculty in meaningful questions and issues to support sustainability and conservation in the Howe Sound region. Together, the working group has created opportunities for faculty and students to work on projects that deepen their connection to the region and connect the youth to nature, real, local issues and community partners.
