A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:
It is expected that all custodians are aware of the waste streams (landfill, recycling, composting, and specialized materials). One representative of each custodial team serves on a volunteer "WasteBusters" committee. The Sustainability Program Coordinator and student sustainability staff provide in-depth waste training for the WasteBusters group to be experts in waste on campus. They turn around and educate other custodians and occupants of their buildings about the triple bin waste system at Carleton. They have an email account wastebusters@carleton.edu that is posted on all waste signage for anyone to ask questions about the waste stream.

A brief description of how the employee educators are selected:
The WasteBusters are selected asking for volunteer custodians from each region of campus to participate in this program. There are 15 custodians that make up the WasteBusters team that meets monthly for on-going training and to report any issues with the waste stream. The Sustainability Office works to provide the Wastebusters with any signage or education materials that they can use to educate the occupants of their buildings.

A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
The Sustainability Program Coordinator and student sustainability staff conduct all training during monthly meetings. This time is also a place where custodians can bring forth ideas for further waste reduction. Wastebusters serve as a waste liaison in their areas across campus, covering all buildings across campus. They monitor waste contamination, TerraCycling and battery collection bins, and answer questions of building residents.

The student labor is part of the existing Sustainability Office budget and the WasteBusters are paid out of the Custodial budget.
