Waste Champions
A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):
Carleton has committed to becoming a zero waste campus, and within our most recent Sustainability Strategic Plan set key objectives towards this goal. At the beginning of each new semester, and working through our dining services partner, student waste champions are deployed to key dining locations to provide peer to peer education about our waste and recycling program. Each student will be allocated a t-shirt with 'Ask me how to use our new recycling station' on it, and information to hand out. The idea is that these students engage and discuss with all users of the main university dining court (open to all students and staff) when they dispose of waste items, educate them to the systems in place across the campus and inform on recycling rates and programs, such as e-waste.
A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (1st program):
The target audience is all student, faculty and staff that visit the main food court on the carleton campus. A full review of packaging was conducted to ensure that almost all waste generated can be recycled or composted but this information needs to be told to users and our community. When students are not in place to inform and educate, a waste wall of all items found in the food court is available.

Residence Eco Reps
A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):
The Residence Eco Reps program is made up of student's who attempt to create a sustainable lifestyle in residence. Each floor is to have an eco-rep, that will work directly with their floor on completing a series of tasks to make their residence/floor more sustainable.
Residence Sustainability Events and programs have included:
Community Cleanups
Community Cleanups are events that take place in October, when Residence staff and students will walk around the Carleton/Ottawa community and collect waste. By joining this initiative, students can recognize the impacts that waste can have on the environment and discuss the importance of disposing waste appropriately.
Sustainable Gift Giving
Do you know that our conventional gifting practices produce so much waste – from energy-consuming production to unsustainable packaging? During the last week of November, Residence staff is presenting students with a Sustainable Gift Giving session, so we will enter the holiday season knowing how to take better care of our planet!
Residence-Wide Challenge
Don’t miss out on our month-long sustainability initiative in February! This is an excellent opportunity for Residence students to understand better their environmental resource consumption.
Earth Hour
We have been so used to the vibrant city lights, but have you ever noticed how our lights outshine those of the stars?
In March, turn off your lights, unplug your electronics, and join our Residence staff in a stargazing event at a location away from bright lights. Not only will you help reduce light pollution and save energy, but perhaps you will discover something fascinating in the sky!
Mindful Move Out
Every April thousands of students move out of residence, and sometimes items that could have been reused or recycled end up in the garbage. However, residence has created multiple initiatives to become more sustainable. The time leading up to move-out can be stressful with exams and final papers due, so it’s important to be proactive in terms of getting ready for move-out. Check out our Mindful Move Out Page to keep yourself organized!
