A brief description of how the physical campus plan or amendment includes sustainability:
Both the current 2002 Campus Plan and the pending 2012 Institutional Master Plan include sustainability at a high level.
In the current 2002 Campus Plan, Appendix A.4 – Sustainability Report. This section is dedicated to sustainable design and development of the campus. The plan protects campus green space from dependence on chemical intensive inputs and energy and resource intensive equipment. The plan also seeks to preserve future building sites to maximize natural systems: solar exposure, wind/natural ventilation, daylighting, and green roof decks.
The plan also prescribes campus building designs with regard to environmental impact while incorporating the
tenants of sustainable design and development in all aspects of site and building design, construction,
maintenance, and operation and establishes that new buildings meets the guidelines for US Green Building Council's LEED building rating system. More details can be read in Appendix 4: Sustainability Carnegie Mellon Campus Master Planning and Sustainable Design and Development and Campus
Ecology, Page #55-58
The proposed 2012 Institutional Master Plan builds upon the 2002 plan by creating a specific chapter in the plan to address sustainability (Chapter 3.8 – Environmental Protection Plan). This chapter address campus planning in a contextual and sustainable manner and will include sections on Water Conservation & Management, Energy Usage, Waste Reduction/Recycling and Transportation Management. The new plan will also reinforce the University’s policy that all new construction, major renovations and building expansion are to be at least LEED Silver certified.
The current Campus Plan was adopted May 2002 and the anticipated approval date for new Institutional Master Plan is April 2012.
