Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
Yes
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution, including how each program addresses the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability:
The 2018 ISA lab workshop in Valencia, Spain included faculty and advanced students in engineering, architecture and urban planning on sustainability tracks from the Univ of British Columbia (UBC), Carnegie Mellon Univ (CMU), Univ. of Cambridge (UCAM), TU Delft, Univ College Cork (UCC), and Univ Politecnica de Valencia (UPV). Two CMU faculty and 6 CMU graduate student (3 engineering & 3 architecture) participated. The focus of this program is to engage a multicultural and multidisciplinary group of faculty and students in real-world sustainable design problem-solving. For the June 2018 workshop, students and faculty lived and worked together on the UPV campus. The students worked in small groups over five days to deliver new concepts for one of four challenges: refurbishment strategies for the Benicalap neighborhood, nZEB strategies for refurbishing public building stock, materials and construction solutions for refurbishment of an XIV century building, and new uses for the Alboraia orchards (more project details in attached file). Each morning a faculty member delivered a keynote based on his/her expertise in some aspect of sustainability. Then, the students were grouped with faculty in teams of 3-5. Each team was comprised of students from different universities to foster multiculturalism and interdisciplinary work. At the end of the week students presented their findings to all groups, and faculty reviewers provided feedback, comments and suggestions about their solutions. Faculty contact: Edward S.
