Open access is strategic for Carnegie Mellon. Open access disseminates as broadly as possible works authored by the CMU community, encouraging use and increasing citations and impact. A brief description of how the institution’s library(ies) support open access to research:
Almost 30% of CMU's scholarly output is published in open access journals. We have institutional funding mechanisms to support authors (e.g., providing funds to maintaining memberships so scholars pay less to publish their research, and paying Article Processing Charges), and participation grows. We also provide an open access repository, recently migrated to a Figshare platform, for those who wish to share pre-prints, manuscripts, and other work. We don’t have extensive data on hand at this stage, but we are undertaking a substantial content recruitment exercise to showcase as much of the university’s research as possible.
