A brief description of the institution’s employee community service initiatives:
Several campus-wide offices provide opportunities for students and others to engage in activities that are designed to share time and expertise in the community. Partners Allied for Civic Engagement (PACE) and Student Leadership, Involvement and Civic Engagement (SLICE) are two initiatives coordinated by Student Affairs. At least 30 different student organizations provide service opportunities through activities such as alternative spring break trips (several held each year), Service Saturdays, 1000+ (1000 volunteers spend a day volunteering!). Several student organizations conduct fundraising activities that make a big difference in the lives of many in the community. For example, proceeds from the annual Greek Sing competition fund Camp Kesem, a program for children whose lives are impacted by a parent's cancer. In 2017 the event raised more than $100,000 for this cause and this was surpassed in 2018 with a donation of $112,598. The Gelfand Center for Service Learning and Outreach, in the Vice Provost for Education division, focuses on educational program that is provided to children and adults in the community. Students serve as tutors or mentors in the community. Several of the academic colleges and even departments within the colleges have staff members who are dedicated to community engagement. The university encourages staff and allows them to take time for several distinct initiatives such as the annual Staff Council Community Food Bank Drive, Toys for Tots, University Police Polar Plunge, and several others.
