Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions

Gross GHG emissions

Gross Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions from stationary combustion 5,727 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 4,481 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions from other sources 1,172 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 1,000 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from imported electricity 76,157 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 95,504 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions from imported thermal energy 52,477 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 67,204 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Total 135,533 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 168,189 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Carbon sinks

Figures needed to determine net carbon sinks:
Performance year Baseline year
Third-party verified carbon offsets purchased 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Institution-catalyzed carbon offsets generated 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from on-site composting 100 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 20 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon storage from non-additional sequestration 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Carbon sold or transferred 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Net carbon sinks 100 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 20 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

If total performance year carbon sinks are greater than zero, provide:

A brief description of the carbon sinks, including vendor, project source, verification program and contract timeframes (as applicable):
Compost weight is the sum of what is produced on main campus as well as the University Farm, using a standard volume to weight conversion validated by our community compost company Rust Belt Riders.

Adjusted net GHG emissions

Adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net GHG emissions 135,433 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 168,169 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Performance and baseline periods

Start and end dates of the performance year and baseline year (or three-year periods):
Performance year Baseline year
Start date July 1, 2021 July 1, 2008
End date June 30, 2022 June 30, 2009

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
Past University President, Barbara Snyder signed Second Nature's ACUPCC in 2008, and the first Climate Action Plan was published in 2011, the baseline was adopted for the year FY09 because it was when the University had access to accurate data.

Part 1. Reduction in GHG emissions per person

Weighted campus users

Figures needed to determine “Weighted Campus Users”:
Performance year Baseline year
Number of students resident on-site 4,433 3,000
Number of employees resident on-site 23 15
Number of other individuals resident on-site 7 0
Total full-time equivalent student enrollment 11,143 8,449
Full-time equivalent of employees 4,129 5,044
Full-time equivalent of students enrolled exclusively in distance education 319 0
Weighted Campus Users 12,335.75 10,873.50

Metrics used in scoring for Part 1

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user:
Performance year Baseline year
Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user 10.98 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent 15.47 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Percentage reduction in adjusted net Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions per weighted campus user from baseline:
29.01

Part 2. GHG emissions per unit of floor area

Performance year floor area

Gross floor area of building space, performance year:
9,753,077 Gross square feet

Floor area of energy intensive building space, performance year:
Floor area
Laboratory space 458,048 Square feet
Healthcare space 7,251 Square feet
Other energy intensive space 0 Square feet

EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
10,683,675 Gross square feet

Metric used in scoring for Part 2

Adjusted net Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per unit of EUI-adjusted floor area, performance year:
0.01 MtCO2e per square foot

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
CWRU has invested heavily into mechanical system upgrades and lighting retrofits since the signing of the Presidents Climate Commitment in 2008, including phasing out the need for heating oil on campus. In conjunction with improvements to the electric grid, electric efficiency has increased while electricity emissions have declined over the last 10+ years. The steam CWRU purchased historically was sourced entirely from coal, but in FY2017 switched to natural gas, which caused an emissions reduction as well.
Furthermore, better data tracking for elements such as more exact refrigerants and fertilizer used data reporting has made the current data set more accurate the earlier years inventories.
