A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Sustainability it tied into all aspects of new student orientation processes. All new students are familiarized with information and resources about recycling and composting on campus through the facilitator presentations in residence halls. Throughout campus tours at orientatiion, designated recycling locations are highlighted and explained. Additionally, when touring dining halls, composting and low-impact dining signage, with pertinent information are displayed and discussed. During this time students also learn how to use the sustainable systems put in place at the dining halls such as the reusable container program.
In addition to the required orientation process, students also have an opportunity to take part in Leadership Safari as a new student at CMU. This is a 3 day program that immerses students in leadership experiences on campus. It empowers incoming students to become leaders in all aspects of campus, including sustainability. In this program, students learn about the sustainable programs on campus and how they can be student activists for sustainability. Please see the attachment in additional documents.
Finally, all students are given access to a comprehensive sustainable living guide that covers all dimenstions of sustainability on campus and in the community. As stated in the description of the living guide created by Central Sustainability "Central Sustainability is a platform dedicated to pursuing sustainability-oriented projects, and we’re committed to raising awareness on the multi-faceted nature of sustainability. That’s why we’ve created this CMU-focused Sustainable Living Guide, which takes a number of big concepts and breaks them down into small, bite-sized tips on how to contribute to a healthier, more sustainable world. Together, we will learn more about sustainability, relevant campus resources, sustainable lifestyles, and how to build genuine, resilient communities."
