Does the institution conduct an assessment of sustainability culture (i.e. the assessment focuses on sustainability values, behaviors and beliefs, and may also address awareness of campus sustainability initiatives)?:
Yes
Which of the following best describes the cultural assessment? The assessment is administered to::
The entire campus community (students, staff and faculty), directly or by representative sample
Which of the following best describes the structure of the cultural assessment? The assessment is administered::
Without a follow-up assessment of the same cohort or representative samples of the same population
A brief description of how and when the cultural assessment(s) were developed and/or adopted:
In the latter part of the spring 2019 semester, both employees and students were surveyed regarding their perceptions and values around campus sustainability at Champlain College. A similar survey was given in spring 2010, so we are able to compare results from nearly a decade ago. The results of the 2010 survey helped inform the creation of the 2013 Sustainability Action Plan.

A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:
In order to get a sense of any changes over time, we used the same questions from the 2010 survey for both employees and students and added a few additional questions. The survey was submitted for review as dictated by the Champlain College survey policy and was entered into the Qualtrics survey instrument by Michelle Miller in the Academic Affairs office. All Burlington based faculty and staff received a direct email to participate in the survey. Due to other institutional survey needs for students (namely the IDEA evaluations for each class) we were unable to directly email students. Therefore, we put together an outreach plan that including tabling at Spring Meltdown, electronic posters, and social media outreach. A small thank you gift (reusable straw, fair trade chocolate, stickers, etc.) were offered to anyone who completed a survey. More student outreach was supposed to occur as part of a service-learning project in a class, but the students unfortunately did not follow through. Therefore, our student participation rate was lower than in 2010.
A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment, including a description of any measurable changes over time:
2019 survey respondents felt that Champlain is doing well in the areas of waste reduction, transportation and food/dining, and would like to prioritize improvements in food/dining, energy conservation, and waste reduction. Overall, respondents feel that campus sustainability is very important to them (more so than in 2010) and offered specific suggestions on what they’d like to see happen on campus and how they’d like to see discussion and decisions made regarding campus sustainability priorities. All of this information will help inform the Center for Service & Sustainability as we move forward with our second version of a campus sustainability strategic plan.
