A brief description of how and when the cultural assessment(s) were developed and/or adopted:
In the latter part of the spring 2022 semester, both employees and students were surveyed regarding their perceptions and values around campus sustainability at Champlain College. The survey was developed by ENP 300 students as a service-learning project, distributed via CS&S newsletter, signage on campus screens, tabling and presented in a few classes.

A similar survey was given in spring 2019 and 2010, so we are able to compare results from nearly a decade ago. The results of the 2010 survey helped inform the creation of the 2013 Sustainability Action Plan.

A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:
In order to get a sense of any changes over time, we used a few of same questions from the 2019 and 2010 surveys for both employees and students and added a few additional questions. The survey was developed by ENP 300 students as a service-learning project, distributed via CS&S newsletter, signage on campus screens, tabling and presented in a few classes.

A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:
44% of the 91 respondents said that it is very important to go to school/work at a sustainable campus/institution. This goes to 78% percent if we bundle very important and important, but 46% feel under or uninformed. The respondents are anxious about climate change (74%) but feel they can express their views about environmentalism (73%). 50% feel that Champlain follows through with sustainability goals, 74% know how to dispose of waste properly on campus but 69% do not know the change making process on campus. 58% feel that sustainability should be taught across the majors and 61% of student respondents feel unprepared about integrating sustainability into their career, however 84% feel they are learning how to become a better citizen of the world.

All of this information will help inform the Center for Service & Sustainability and partners as we develop our next Sustainability/Climate Action Plan in Fall 2022.

Comparing 2022 and 2019 results:
In 2022: 44% of the 91 respondents said that it is very important to go to school/work at a sustainable campus/institution. This goes to 78% percent if we bundle very important and important. A DROP from 2019 results.
In 2019: 52% of 226 respondents said it was very important to go to school/work at a sustainable campus/institution. This goes to 87% percent if we bundle very important and important.

In 2022: 46% feel under or uninformed about sustainability on campus. An INCREASE from 2019 results.
In 2019, 30% felt under or uninformed about sustainability on campus.
