CUNY INTERDISCIPLINARY GRANT
The diversity throughout CUNY’s 25-college system makes it well placed to meet the most pressing issues facing our society. Our University has faculty experts in crucial research areas, strong ties to city and state agencies, and is integrated into every NYC neighborhood.
During AY2021-2022, the CUNY Office of Research will support collaborative research in the following significant areas:
Climate science
Data science/artificial intelligence
Public health

Also, from the Center for the Study of Brooklyn:
· We were awarded a $40,000 Interdisciplinary Climate Crisis Grant with the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay, Community Sensor Lab at the Advanced Science Research Center, and Urban Sustainability program to help waterfront communities throughout the city adapt to routine flooding events that are expected to come more frequently with rising sea levels. We piloted a small network of flood sensors and expanded a citizen science community engagement strategy that collects flood data that will be used by government agencies, researchers and residents to understand flood risks and plan adaptation strategies. The project employed 5 interns; generated our Guide to Citizen Science Terminology, Guide to Virtual Community Engagement, and Pandemic Lessons in Community Engagement White Paper; and was featured in CUNY press. Our work informs the city’s new community engagement strategy around flood sensors as they attempt to scale this effort with a multi-million dollar contract with the SRIJB. We are organizing a May 2022 panel focused on lessons from community-engaged research during the pandemic that will include this work.
