The mission of Brooklyn College's sustainability initiative is to create an overarching culture of sustainability throughout the entire campus community by raising awareness of, engagement in and commitment to reducing our carbon footprint through campus-based education, research, operations, community-based collaboration, and service. Our sustainability planning will take special recognition of the constraints, opportunities, and responsibilities attendant with our urban location in one of the most densely populated cities in the United States.

The sustainability office works with a variety of resources, staff, faculty experts, and students through research, curriculum development, upgrades to our physical plant and numerous student initiatives, the office seeks to be make the college a more sustainable institution and to educate our students to create a sustainable future.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
Several members of the campus community consult with each other and together contribute to creating a sustainable institution and education for a sustainable future. The Brooklyn College Sustainability Council, as part of CUNY's sustainability initiative, is charged with creating and implementing Brooklyn College's 10-Year Plan for sustainability. Its primarily focused on facilities and operations and also has an education and outreach component. Each council member is also a designated "campus liaison" in his or her specific pillar area of expertise.

Under the supervision of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the College’s EHS & Sustainability Coordinator will organize, monitor, and maintain campus sustainability initiatives. In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, duties include but are not limited to:
Coordinate Sustainability Initiatives
Provide daily support on implementing sustainability initiatives, especially for the areas of waste stream management and energy conservation.
Communicate regularly with campus stakeholders and partners regarding sustainability initiatives and efforts through ongoing interactions, training opportunities, and information.
Represent the campus at Sustainable CUNY and meetings with external community partners on opportunities and emerging sustainability issues
Collect and Track Performance
With the assistance of the Director, develop a sustainability performance indicator database
Work with all departments to collect data needed for defined metrics
Update key data metrics on a regular basis
Prepare tables, graphs, and other visual reporting tools for monthly and annual reporting
Provide Project Assistance
With the assistance of the Director, identify opportunities for events, initiatives, funding opportunities, and collaborations with campus partners.
Coordinate with researchers, project managers, student clubs as necessary to facilitate successful implementation
Conduct Research on Current Sustainability Practices
Stay abreast of campus sustainability trends and prepare brief summaries of findings as requested.
General Administration
With assistance from the EHS Coordinator, organize administration of contracts, invoices, receipts
Assist with ensuring timely submission of permits, licenses, and compliance/performance reports.
