A brief description of the institution’s formal participatory or shared governance bodies:
Brooklyn College is committed to a shared governance framework with equal participation from students, faculty, and the administration. We have an Undergraduate Student Government and a Graduate Student Government, Faculty Council, and Council on Administrative Policy, in addition to committees on personnel and budget, promotion and tenure. Many if not all college committees and task forces have student, academic staff, and non-academic staff representation. Furthermore, our highest decision-making committee, the Policy Council, is comprised of diverse campus stakeholders including the President (Chair); the Provost, Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration, Vice President of Student Affairs, Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness, Executive Legal Counsel, the Chief Diversity Officer, Deans from each of five the Schools, 10 faculty members plus 1 alternate, 10 undergraduate student representatives, 2 graduate student representatives along with one non-voting member.
The Presidential Advisory Committee for Staff was established in 2021 and has a wide range of staff in its membership, from custodian and college assistant to administrative managers. . The committee's mission is to serve as a forum for staff to raise concerns, needs, and feedback directly to the President and to establish formal participation in the shared governance of the institution. As the result of the committee's work and as of April 2023, non-academic staff officially obtained a non-voting seat on Faculty Council. Non-academic staff interests are also represented through various unions, such as Police Benevolent Association, District Council 37, Teamsters, Operating Engineers, among others unions.
