The University President is the co-Chair of this council. Several faculty and staff members have contributed to sub-committees and other initiatives within the council.
The council's purpose is to Lead the Economic Renaissance of New York State's Small Cities and Rural Communities in northern New York
We will:
* Energize our communities by building on growth in the aerospace, transit equipment, defense, biotech, energy, and manufacturing industries
* Leverage our gateway to Canada, the nation’s largest trading partner, to lead the State in global investment

As a strategy for fulfilling our climate commitments (Second Nature) two members of Clarkson's Sustainability Committee approached the village and town boards of Potsdam, NY. As a result both local municipalities joined the Climate Smart Communities program for NYS. A joint Climate Smart task force between the village and the town has been formed. A Clarkson faculty member chairs the ghg subcommittee, Clarkson's Sustainability Coordinator chairs the resiliency subcommittee, and we are also represented on the community development subcommittee for the task force. We have supported this initiative financially through a workshop that we coordinated to begin work on the CSC program (the workshop benefited many communities besides Potsdam), and through the salary of the faculty and staff that are working directly with the village and town.

A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability, including website URL (if available) and information to support each affirmative response above (3rd partnership):
This is a formal partnership with the NY Olympic Region (Lake Placid, North Elba, Olympic Regional Development Authority, and School system of LP) and the US Green Building Council. It is both an applied program with current certification process for USGBC's LEED for Communities Program. Contact person at USGBC is Vatsal Bhatt, vbhatt@usgbc.org. Website availability will occur soon through the Lake Placid Development website.

Clarkson's University Engineer worked with the village of Potsdam to develop a plan for fixing Potsdam's west hydrodam, which had a broken gear box and was out of service. Besides Clarkson labor and expertise going into the project we have developed a PPA with the village. Clarkson purchases all of the electricity from the dam at an above market rate.
We have an MoU with the Minna Anthony Nature Center in Wellesley Island. We work with them on environmental awareness events. We also partner with the St. Lawrence Land Trust and the Thousand Island Land Trust on conservation efforts throughout our community as a strategy for meeting our climate goals.
