Creation Stories: Landscapes and the Human Imagination: This class will be a presentation of sky and creation stories from diverse cultures around the world, past and present. The stories will be taken from Professor Aveni’s most recent books: Sky Stories: Constellations and People (2019) and Creation Stories: Landscapes and the Human Imagination (2021).

Presenter: Anthony F. Aveni is the Russell Colgate Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Astronomy, Anthropology, and Native American Studies at Colgate University, where he has taught since 1963. Dr. Aveni helped develop the field of archaeoastronomy and is a lecturer, speaker, and editor/author of three dozen books on ancient astronomy.



Exploring the Deep Sea Remotely: In this class we will explore the deep ocean seafloor using new detailed maps and video collected by robotic vehicles. We'll study the unique continental margin off the Southeast U.S. coast, where vast coral communities were discovered 0.5 miles deep in 2018, and further explored as recently as November 2021.

Presenter: Leslie Reynolds Sautter, PH.D., has taught Marine Geology for 30 years at the College of Charleston and has been mapping the seafloor for the last fifteen of those years. As part of her job, she has been able to participate in numerous voyages at sea, mapping and using submersibles and other robotic vehicles to explore the fascinating seabed.



Women’s Rights in US History: This seminar will identify major themes in U.S. women’s history with a particular eye towards the decades-long suffrage movement. We will trace the emergence of feminist ideas from the margins of democratic thought to the center of modern political discourse and culture, and examine the ways that women's voices have been collected and commemorated in museums, monuments, and public history, most recently in the 2020 centennial celebrations of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

Presenter: Monica L. Mercado is Assistant Professor of History at Colgate University, affiliated with the programs in Museum Studies and Women’s Studies. She has worked as a curator, researcher, and college educator for twenty years, and is particularly interested in the ways that the histories of women are represented in the U.S. museums, archives and public monuments.



Sustainability at Home: Can I recycle that?: In this session, we will discuss the impacts of consumerism and the waste we leave behind. We will review Madison County’s recycling program as well as best practices for recycling at home. Participants will be invited to ask questions, share ideas, and discuss personal experiences.

Presenter: John Pumilio became Colgate’s first Director of Sustainability in April 2009. Since that time, Colgate has implemented numerous sustainability programs that have reduced its ecological and carbon footprints. John has worked all over the world developing programs to introduce hundreds of individuals, students, and citizen-scientists to the wonders of nature around the world– and the threat they face.
