A brief description of the institution’s community garden:
The Hidden Hands Garden at Stono Preserve in Hollywood, South Carolina is managed by the College of Charleston’s Sustainable Agriculture Program in partnership with staff and faculty in multiple departments and programs. The goal of this project is to go beyond teaching students and visitors of Stono Preserve about gardening strictly through an environmental sustainability lens by intentionally bringing in the agricultural history of the South Carolina Lowcountry, including the contributions of indigenous peoples who historically resided in the region, into educational and interactive programming. Sustainable practices historically employed and shared by indigenous people are highlighted, implemented and celebrated, including the “three sisters” planting technique. Students are encouraged to help maintain this garden space by participating in regularly scheduled garden work days.
The Hidden Hands Garden is accessible for use to the off-campus community. Recent examples of community member partners that have visited, tended to, enhanced or benefited from the gardens include Boy Scouts of America, the Charleston Area Beekeeping Association, the Green Heart Project, the South Carolina Aquarium, and the Charleston community chapter of Stone Soup Collective. More information on community access and partnerships can be found online at http://mes.cofc.edu/sustainable-agriculture-program/student-garden-at-dixie-plantation.php.
